Blocking the pass
Leo Santos taught us a few techniques tonight. He’s at Martial Arts Planet for this week.
A couple of them caught my attention because I have not been able to deal with them in the past. From butterfly guard, if your opponent passes one leg on the way to a full pass, try and grab the trailing knee to delay the pass, shrimp in a bit and reinsert the hook. Simple enough. The key is recognizing what your opponent is doing and focus on the leg that will pass rather than the one that has already passed.
The other was your opponent’s double leg grab at the knees on the way to a pass. React quickly by grabbing the gi at the wrist on the side on which your opponent is trying to pass. Hold the wrist tight, roll onto the opposite shoulder while holding that wrist, and 1) shrimp backward and away. Bring your legs back into a guard if possible. Or, 2) reach over with the opposite hand, grab their belt, bridge, and roll them across you.
Today was my son’s birthday. He is as big as I am now and I can tell he will be a lot bigger when he finishes growing. He took the night off BJJ because he is sore after the weekend seminar.
